New systematic review on post-dengue fatigue

A new review has looked at why some people experience lasting fatigue after dengue infection.
The researchers brought together findings from nine previous studies involving almost 1,500 people. They found that women and people who had more severe dengue or muscle pain during the initial illness were more likely to experience fatigue afterwards. Some evidence also suggested that low levels of platelets – small blood cells involved in clotting – during the infection may be linked to both later fatigue and depression.
The study adds to our understanding of how persistent fatigue can develop after different types of infection.
COFFI researchers Anna Condé, Patrick Gérardin, Carolina Sandler and Andrew Lloyd led and contributed to the review.
